As
you would expect in a town where lawmakers schmooze power
brokers, academics can be tough culinary graders, and techies
and musicians require high-grade fuel, Austin's eateries
don't disappoint. Chic industrial spaces vie for diners'
dollars with gracious 100-year-old houses and plant-filled
hippie shacks, while inside the food ranges from upscale
New American to the stylish but reasonably priced cuisine
once dubbed "Nouveau Grub" by Texas Monthly magazine
to tofu burgers, barbecue, and enchiladas. Many of these
dining rooms are Austin originals, but in recent years such
high-end chains as Sullivan's, Fleming's, Ruth's Chris,
P.F. Chang's, and Roy's have also established a local presence.
The two areas where the greatest number of trendy restaurants
are concentrated are downtown's West End/Warehouse district,
near Fourth and Colorado streets, and South Congress Avenue,
less than a mile away. But there are plenty of other great
places to eat in and around downtown, including the row
of casual eateries on Barton Springs Road, near Zilker Park,
just south of Town Lake. And the downtown dining scene is
expanding its perimeters, as the Sixth and Lamar area west
of the Warehouse District continues to heat up. |
