Boston, founded in 1630 by English colonists, is one of the oldest cities in the United States, and was a hotbed of activity during the American Revolution. Its rich history is just one reason more than 20 million tourists, many of them families, visit every year. Often called “America’s Walking City,” Boston is compact, so you can take in most of the city’s major attractions on foot.
A red brick path marks the Freedom Trail, winding through the Boston National Historic Park and encompassing 16 important historic sites such as Faneuil Hall, Old North Church, and Quincy Market.
Downtown attractions include the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the Children’s Museum, featuring delightful hands-on exhibits. You’ll also enjoy exploring Boston’s distinct neighborhoods, each with its own ethnic feel and eclectic architecture.
And if your visit to Boston includes shopping, you’ll love the designer boutiques, high-end department stores, and unusual galleries located throughout the city. Follow our recommended links to find great seasonal bargains and last-minute travel deals for your upcoming trip. |

With four distinct seasons, Boston’ climate is influenced by the warming influence of the ocean in winter, and cooled by onshore breezes in the summer, making its seasonal temperatures more moderate than even a few miles inland.
Temperatures average 80° (F) in summer, and can hover in the 30°s (F) during the winter. And although it’s crowded with tourists during the summer, Boston’s peak travel season is fall, when fall foliage tours often begin or end along the Freedom Trail with its dazzling display of color.
