Boston Bars, Clubs and Nightlife Guide... |
 |
 |
Boston
is a city divided into neighborhoods, and its nightclubs
are divided into crowds. Armani-clad international students
head out late, after taking over one of the swanky restaurants
on Newbury Street for preclubbing martinis. After dinner,
they press $50 bills into the palms of doormen to get in
ahead of the queue, and spend 1 AM-2 AM swilling champagne
and grinding to imported techno at a downtown club.
Baseball cap-sporting students fill up clubs and pubs along
Lansdowne Street, and hipsters bar-hop from Cambridge clubs
to Allston "Rock City" and Jamaica Plain to catch
live bands. Some clubs do double duty, scheduling live music
early, then packing in a late-night dance crowd. Theme nights
at clubs change frequently, so call first or check local
listings. Cover charges for local acts and club bands generally
run $5-$15; big-name acts can be double that. Dance clubs
usually charge a cover of $5-$10. There's also a thriving
"lounge" scene in downtown's coolest hybrid bar-restaurant-clubs,
providing a mellower, more mature alternative to the student-focused
club scene.

Lansdowne St Boston, MA 02215
Catch a rock band early in the evening, go home and change, then come back
after 10pm to dance until 2am. Thursday's International Night lures a large
foreign-student crowd, while on Fridays "Avaland" features top-notch
local and acclaimed national DJs (Paul Oakenfold, Armand Van Helden). More
local DJs pump up Saturdays, and Sunday's Gay Night is legendary... |

10
Huntington Ave,
Boston, MA
02116
Unlike most hotel bars, Bar 10 attracts an after-work crowd of professionals
more likely to hail from offices next door than from out of town. The decor
is understated, with furniture of sleek black wood and beige and tangerine
velvet. Slatted window shades and heavy curtains block the light from outside... |
|
275
Tremont St,
Boston, MA
02116
Located across from the Wang Center, Caprice attracts euro students and
club kids with its moneyed vibe. The split-level establishment features
a lounge with two pool tables and a private bar on the second floor. Dark,
rich colors and floor-to-ceiling drapes give both rooms an international
feel. Drink prices are not for the faint of heart... |
|
710
Boylston St (Lenox Hotel)
Boston, MA
02116
Perhaps as impressive as the bar's visual offerings are the drinks. From
obscure bourbons and malts to a heady wine list, hard-to-please drinkers
should leave satiated. The three "Infusions Diabolique," including Maker's
Mark whiskey infused with Turkish figs, Chinese cinnamon and fresh vanilla
bean, are dream-like in their complexity... |
|

Huntington Ave,
Boston, MA
02116
Champions displays plenty of Boston memorabilia, giving a somewhat local
feel to the lone outpost of a national sports bar chain. Friendly bartenders
and servers are careful not to interfere with anyone's view of the dozens
of TV screens (several booths contain small screens, enabling patrons to
choose what game to watch)... |
|
533
Washington St Boston, MA 02111
Located in the heart of Boston's Ladder District, Felt Boston
is one of Boston's premier event venues. Whether visiting
from out of state, coming after work, or just a night out

|
65
Chatham St Boston, MA 02109
For sheer people-watching potential, few Boston nightspots are better.
Downstairs, Abercrombie-clad students mingle with a distinctly local crowd.
Upstairs, it's an urban dance scene, with a multiethnic crowd strutting
its stuff, digging the hip-hop, and macking on the bridesmaids who got
lost on their way to the bachelorette party... |
|
17
Holland St Somerville, MA 02144
A Somerville landmark since the '70s, Johnny D's quietly serves a diverse,
ever-changing crowd; the clientele's makeup changes from night to night,
depending on the evening's concert. With such a varied schedule, it's wise
to know ahead of time what's in store. It could be a hillbilly jam one
night, salsa the next... |
|
10
Scotia St,
Boston, MA
02115
Located in the former Loews Cheri cinema, this sprawling subterranean hangout
offers various activities to a diverse clientele. By day, an all-ages crowd
relaxes while enjoying games of 10-pin bowling. Come nightfall, the scene
heats up as the kids go home and the socialites arrive, bringing with them
lengthy waits for open tables and lanes... |
|
131
State St Boston, MA 02109
The sole U.S. outpost of this European chain of Irish bars benefits from
its heavily-trafficked location between the Financial District and Quincy
Market. Daytime brings a trickle of tourists and area workers, while a
young local crowd fills up the space at night. The bar drips with character,
thanks to pine floors imported from Belfast and stained glass windows depicting
historical Irish scenes... |

Congress St,
Boston, MA
02210
Lucky's signature laid-back vibe is kicked up to another level when rollicking
Motown, funk and blues bands take the stage (nightly except for Mondays).
In the crowd, people dance wherever they can find the room, while wallflowers
sample house martinis like the Lady Luck, a bubbly raspberry-lime concoction... |
|
145
Ipswich St Boston, MA 02215
Lucky Strike, a national chain of upscale bowling lounges, has a prominent
Boston home directly above Jillian's popular pool hall. Despite 16 lanes,
weekend waiting times have been known to top two hours. Those on the list--no
reservations are taken--pass the time drinking designer cocktails while
gawking at an astounding 80 feet by 10 feet video wall... |
|
27
Columbus Ave Boston, MA 02116
Eclectic Irish food & spirits, a warm friendly atmosphere & beautifully
handcrafted woodwork & murals make this authentic, upscale Irish pub
one of Boston's best. Escape from the hustle & bustle of the city and
come in and enjoy a delicious meal, have a pint & some great conversation... |
|
315
Massachusetts Ave,
Cambridge, MA

as a stylish lounge. The nighttime vibe depends on who's spinning (different
DJs appear nightly)... |
|
48
Winter St,
Boston, MA
02108
With its attractive, international clientele and hot Latin tunes, Mojitos
stakes its claim as one of the city's hottest nightlife spots. Thursdays
host live salsa and merengue bands, while Fridays see crowds dance to a
mix of reggaeton, bachata and other international genres. Saturdays start
at 9pm with free salsa lessons... |
|
1
Bennett St ,
Cambridge, MA
021389
Anyone looking for a romantic hideaway perfect for carrying on a forbidden
affair should look no further than the aptly named Noir (the only fixtures
that aren't black are the red lamps). High-backed black banquettes are
ideal for canoodling, as is the hipster soundtrack... |
|
967-969
Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215
The Paradise remains one of the city's most unique and rewarding venues
to catch bands: Its small size (it boasts a capacity of around 500) casts
performances from big-name acts in an intimate light. Future mega-stars
such as U2, Van Halen and the Police all made their first Boston-area appearances
here... |
|
200
High St Boston, MA 02110
Revolution Rock Bar is a new venue with a tribute to all things rock 'n'
roll. This bar, lounge and restaurant has two floors. Dual DJ booths and
a stage fit for a rock star, or a band of them, allows for multiple live
entertainment options... |
|

twenty-somethings coming back for its affordable drinks, varied menu items

guests of the chic Onyx Hotel. The cozy seating arrangement promotes intimate
conversations. The bar's cocktail list includes several concoctions like
the
"Charm School" (Woodford RS, Apple Pucker and cranberry juice)... |
|
90
Exeter St,
Boston, MA
02116
Deep in the bowels of the Copley Square Hotel lies the city's first
self-described "nitery" (though it's more of an upscale lounge than a "nighttime
eatery"). Saint's designers obviously had fun filling this turn-of-the-20th-century
space with various stylish and futuristic accoutrements.... |
|

By day, there are plenty of leather seats and tables for those looking
to eat or relax, while at night most of the downstairs level is cleared
out to allow space for dancing to popular, DJ-spun tunes. Several well-stocked
bars are strategically located to ensure no patrons have to wait long for
a drink while munching on satisfying, upscale bar food ... |
|
7
Lansdowne St,
Boston, MA
02215
Promising "Spring Break 52 weeks a year," this multilevel drinking destination
attracts young, hormonally charged students, especially during weekly Wet
T-shirt and "Buff Body" contests. Red Sox game days find a slightly older
crowd filling the circular booths (each with a personal TV) and tables
on the outdoor patio... |
|
1249
Commonwealth Ave Allston, MA 02134
The Avenue's cheap drinks and laid-back vibe make it a favorite
with the area's huge barely-21 crowd. Many patrons choose
to come as they are--think jeans, sneakers and baseball
caps. With Allston's most popular bars within walking distance,
the Avenue serves as a great, inexpensive place to meet
up with friends before heading out to a final destination... |
|
500
Commonwealth Ave,
Boston, MA

The Foundation Lounge, true to its name, at the core of that fashionable

style, and Asian elegance, and you have a classy-yet-funky Foundation... |
|
166
Canal St,
Boston, MA
02114
Just a block from the FleetCenter, it's a convenient place to grab food
and drinks before the game. On tap: Budweiser, Bass, Harpoon, Guinness,
Miller Lite and Sam Adams. For a sports bar, Fours' grub is above average.
The shrimp Rafael appetizer is five jumbo shrimp lightly breaded and fried.
Among the sandwiches, the Bobby Riggs turkey club and the Bobby Orr steak
and cheese are standouts... |
|
28
Kingston St,
Boston, MA
02111
Boston's new Good Life has become a classy, but contemporary, place to
meet new people, socialize and hear great live music in the heart of Boston's
financial district. Local artwork, an upscale vodka bar and contemporary
live bands and DJs combine to yield a wholly different atmosphere than
that of its predecessor... |
|
161
Brighton Ave Allston, MA 02134
The Kells is the biggest and splashiest of Allston-Brighton's many Irish
bars, with performance spaces and music both upstairs and down. Guinness
is a staple here, as are traditional frat-boy drinks like domestic beers
and kamikaze shots. Popular local DJs spin a variety of original rock,
dance music and reggae just about every night... |
|
472
Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA 02139
There's a heavy bent toward local bands at this popular
landmark, but national acts do roll in each month. Headliners
set up downstairs, and there's a huge space to jam in front
of its large stage. There are also two good-sized bars and
a coat check. Upstairs is significantly smaller and brighter
with a moderate bar... |
|
