Chicago Bars, Clubs, and Nightlife Guide |
Chicago's
bustling energy isn't confined to daylight hours. The city
offers something for everyone, from discriminating culture
vultures to hard-core club-hoppers. But nightlife here has
a distinctly low-key, midwestern flavor.
Chicago also has a thriving music scene, with clubs devoted
to everything from jazz and blues to alternative rock, reggae,
and Latin beats. Music and nightclub haunts are scattered
throughout the city, but many are concentrated in Lincoln
Park, Lakeview, and Wicker Park.
While the city has its share of see-and-be-seen spots, Chicagoans
in general are not obsessed with getting into the latest
hot club. We'd much rather hang out with our buddies at
a neighborhood bar. To join us, you only have to pick a
residential area and wander. You don't have to go far to
find a tavern filled with locals and maybe a pool table
or a dartboard or two...

The big, open room pleases many masters: Sunday through Wednesday, people
come in jeans to watch sports or feed the jukebox, munch wings, and play
Golden Tee. Thursday through Saturday, patrons spiff up in something black
or sparkly, and voila--they're sipping martinis and swinging lounge-style
with DJs who spin a bit of everything... |

back... |

Youth, fashion and aggressive partying have returned. Sonically, techno
rules the mirror-balled main room. Professional dancers on platforms above
the floor and front bar energize the party. Though mixed drinks can be
lightweight and beers pricey, Crobar's vibe and service are upbeat--and
its gender mix favorable... |

Host to a mix of blues, jazz, funk, rap and world musicians of varying
notoriety, this spot is also a popular dining spot. HOB's upstairs music
hall is decorated with Southern outsider art. Sight lines on the main floor
are terrific, sound is almost as stunning, and if you don't mind standing
(little seating is available), this is the place to be... |

W Hubbard St Chicago, IL 60610
Whoops and hollers are heard down the street from this outpost of the national
chain. Decor is standard--stage, tables, bar--but the upbeat atmosphere
draws a melting pot of young couples, older groups and birthday-celebrating
30-somethings. Those shy about singing gather around the front bar, while
extroverts sit on the lower level of the two-level room... |

This low-lit hotel bar is high-energy after work (especially Thursdays

The club has two levels, with an L-shaped bar tucked off to the right on
the main floor. When the audience hits capacity, try to get to the wide,
