A bar that has everything? Our front room maintains
its historic roots to old Greenwich Village.
A gallery of Village faces - in photographs
and paintings - line the walls, documenting
the bar's long history. Wooden booths,
brick, and antique lighting give the bar
its lived in, comfortable feel - informal
and friendly.
The
back room, hidden behind the curtain is
a breath-taking change. Oriental rugs,
Moroccan lanterns and the remnants of the
buildings original 1880's windows set the
tone. The music: selections from the greatest
artists of the entire world. Antique couches,
a full-on throne, and other plush nooks
fill the space, forming a variety of cozy
conversation pits.
The Scene
On the surface, this bar appears to be just
another noisy, crowded after-work or after-school
scene. But move beyond the bar's cramped
front room and find a casual crowd unwinding
in a lively space with wooden booths, quirky
wall art and mini table-side TVs. For the
real surprise, slip behind a side curtain
into a lavish bohemian lounge where would-be
couples sink into inviting velvet couches
amid Moroccan lanterns.
The Draw
Plasma TVs, dartboards, Web-access terminals,
a jukebox, a pool table: There are enough
diversions to occupy even the shortest attention
span. The drink selections--beer, cognac,
martinis--suit a variety of tastes, and raspberry
liqueurs give the bar's namesake drink an
appropriately robust flavor. While more obvious
choices exist for meeting people and kicking
back (or making out), this split-personality
feline is ideal for those who want to keep
their options open.
