Its
cozy-chic feel, contempo-rusto décor,
private back foyer and lineup of underground
Dj's fashion a downtown niche in "Hellsea".
Sortie is a discreet spot for those with
the look for the uniquely palatable libation
menu, a nose for fine wines and champagnes,
the taste buds for imported artisinal
beers-carrying over 30-and an inclination
for tasty cuisine with mussels, a raw
bar and an array of eclectic tapas-style
bites.
The
Scene
Visitors step down from a tree-lined
street to the front patio, where a brightly
colored mosaic and handful of umbrella tables
greet them. But inside the subterreanean
space, the look is more dark and sultry.
A giant old Pegasus sign, retired from a
Mobil gas station, embellishes the brick-exposed
wall beside a roomy square-shaped bar. There,
neighborhood patrons with decidedly uptown
style sit and mingle. Further back, a dining
room lined with plush red banquettes accommodates
after-work guests who want to rest their
feet more poshly.
The Draw
With romantic lighting, black-and-white
photos hanging from the bordello
red walls, and a DJ spinning mellow
grooves, the place feels like an
escape from the city streets. The
subtly herbal Madagascar, a concoction
of basil-infused vodka, black cherry
vodka, raspberry liqueur, and lime
juice, is absolutely transporting--though
the orangey kumquat martini fails
to move you to the tropics.
