The stock market crashed 4 months after its June 1929 debut, and no one could afford to build such expensive showplaces afterward. Description: The land that the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre sits on has been devoted to the arts since 1879. The Turner Verein Association built the Turner Opera House, which operated as Rische's Opera, the Houston Street Theatre, the Alhambra Theatre and the Empire Opera House. The Empire has been used as a venue for vaudeville, silent and talking motion pictures, concerts and live theatre. Reopened in April 1998, as the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, San Antonio's grandest intimate theatre resumes its prestigious position as one of our most beautiful live entertainment and special events venues. Description: Laurie Auditorium is located on the campus of Trinity University midway between downtown San Antonio and the International Airport. A unique venue that plays an important role in both Campus life and the life of San Antonio, the amphitheatre design and wide stage allow for excellent site lines through out the hall. Normal seating capacity is 2,479 and can be increased to 2,709 by additional seats on the covered pit. The Auditorium is host to the San Antonio Symphony School Concerts, the Children's Fine Art Series, Arts San Antonio Events and concerts, and a wide variety of dance presentations, concerts, world-renowned lecturers and corporate meetings. Artists like Bill Cosby, Victor Borge, and Hal Holbrook in "Mark Twain Tonight!" Kodo, Jay Leno, Anne Murray , Patti Labelle, B.B. King, Van Cliburn and "Stomp" have all performed in recent years. Trinity's Distinguished Lecture and Science Series have brought to campus life a remarkable variety of former heads of state, journalists, writers, poets and numerous Nobel Laureates. Description: The beautiful stage proscenium and decorative organ grills that are on either side of it, make any stage presentation a first class production. The stage boasts of the 45 foot by 75 foot stage, with a 37 and a half foot high proscenium arch. The stage is complete with a full complement of curtains, theatrical lighting and a concert quality sound system. The main auditorium seats nearly five thousand. The elaborate Mediterranean lobby can be used for registration or small receptions. Two rooms on either side of the lobby are referred to as the Wing Rooms. Each Wing Room is 1,900 square feet and can be used for small meetings, receptions and banquets. Each Wing Room will seat 100 theater style. The lower level of the auditorium has been redesigned to yield 23,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space. The center section has 8,000 square feet of exhibit/banquet/meeting space. It will seat 400 theater style. A total of 117 – 10X10 exhibit booths can be accommodated when using the entire 23,000 square feet of space. ...
