If you’re planning a trip to the U.S. capital, get ready to be “wowed” by Washington D.C. No doubt, this city on the Potomac is the center of America’s powerful political action and a haven for history buffs. But aside from touring all the world-renown national landmarks, memorials and monuments, you’ll find that the District could keep you entertained for weeks if not months.
Some of the museums are so massive that you could spend days in them — the reason why some have onsite cafes and restaurants. A few museums worth considering include the world-class Smithsonian Institute on the National Mall, the National Geographic Museum downtown, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (bring tissues).
Throughout downtown D.C., you’ll find heaps of hotels, retailers and restaurants. Slip into a more upscale lunch spot like The Capital Grille, and you might find yourself eavesdropping on political bigwigs while slurping French onion soup. Or, opt for picnicking in one of many, beautifully manicured parks. Then play in more sunshine, picking from the oodles of outdoor activities like Arlington National Cemetery, Potomac Park and The National Zoo. Just beyond Washington D.C., there are countless historical daytrips and excursions — Mt. Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, Civil War battlefields and more.
Come evening, consider some eclectic neighborhood dining, take in the skyline glow at Point of View Rooftop Bar, or catch first-class music or theater at the famed Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. |

When it comes to food, visiting a city that’s an international draw for top officials, politicians and celebrities definitely has an upside. Washington D.C. “gets” gourmet restaurants, multicultural cuisine and first-class service. But there’s a more casual, affordable and even funky side to D.C. dining scene, too, everything from mobile truck vendors to national chains and fantastic ethnic eateries. |
